ALUMNI from Cam McKinney '93 "In this special anniversary year, I ask you to think about the parts of your Latin experience that continue to play a role in your life today." As temperatures plummet around Chicago and I sit typing this article wearing my mittens, I am reminded of our warm Homecoming and 125th anniversary celebration just a few short months ago. It set the tone for quite an extraordinary year at the Latin School of Chicago, one that will be among the most memorable of my 30 (plus) years as a Latin student, alum and parent. The celebration commenced with a spectacular all-school parade through Lincoln Park led by a spirited and representative group of alumni stretching all the way from the Class of 1944 from both the boys and girls schools to the Class of 2008. With energy rivaling that of a World Cup celebration, more than 1,500 students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends in an amazing array of blue and orange attire, followed the marching band and belted out the fight song (helpfully printed on the back of T-shirts worn by faculty and students). The celebration continued all weekend, with more than 650 alumni, former faculty and guests attending at least one of the 22 events, including 500 who came to school for Saturday evening's Roman Reunion. Alumni Association President In this special anniversary year, I ask you to think about the parts of your Latin experience that continue to play a role in your life today, perhaps from an inspiring academic experience, an engaged and encouraging faculty member, an extracurricular activity morphed into a professional or personal passion, or enduring friendships. The stories told and retold in October as classmates and friends gathered to celebrate proved time and again that there is something in each of us that we carry forward from our years at Latin on Scott Street, Dearborn Parkway and North Boulevard. How will you honor your Latin roots this year? Making a gift to the Annual Fund helps Latin continue to inspire and lead, and brings the opportunity to attend to more students. Engaging with the alumni community by attending our upcoming Latin Professionals Evening on February 3, sending in a story for the archives from your time at Latin, or providing your expertise and advice to current students and young alumni exploring career options, are some of the many ways we as alumni can strengthen our alumni network and broaden school resources. As our 125th celebration continues throughout the school year, I encourage you to feel for yourself the enormous energy and positive spirit that our teachers, staff, and students carry inside and outside the walls of Latin. I look forward to seeing many of you at our events this year, and remind you of the importance of keeping Latin in mind during this 125th Anniversary year. Sincerely, Cam McKinney 124 L AT I N M AGAZINE
