Students check out the new upper school science center. 2011 – A New Chapter In September 2011, the fifth grade moved into the middle school. 120 L AT I N M AGAZINE In 2010 a search committee made up of members of the board of trustees, faculty and administrators, embarked on an extensive national search for Latin's 15th head of school. Recognizing how far Latin School had come over the last three decades, the committee faced a challenging assignment. The new head would have to be someone who could lead the school as it fulfilled its ambitious vision for the future while also respecting its tradition for excellence and the work faculty, students and families had been doing on behalf of the school for more than 120 years. Moreover, he or she would have to be someone who could embrace the complex and vibrant community that Latin had become. It was with great anticipation that Latin welcomed Randall Dunn in July 2011. "Randall was everything and more we could have hoped for in a head of school and we felt that he had the potential to take an already great school and make it even greater," former Board of Trustees Chair Jeff Sharp said recently. "In the last three years, his positive energy and enthusiasm have infected students, faculty, parents and alumni at Latin in a very exciting way." Dunn came to Latin with a lifelong commitment to academic excellence and a belief in the transformative power of education. A graduate of Brown and Harvard universities, Dunn had most recently served as head at The Roeper School, an independent school outside of Detroit, for seven years. Previously he had worked as a classroom teacher, coach and senior administrator at independent, public, day and boarding schools on the East Coast and in the Midwest. He also had been an active leader and board member of educational organizations nationwide. Randall Dunn, Latin's 15th Head of School.
