l. how ed a hool ugh arly 60s. 1950-1959 1960-1969 1970-1979 Boys, Girls schools merge 1953 More than 10 years after it is first discussed, the boys and girls schools merge, keeping the boys' colors and mascot and most of the girls' curriculum. 1955 Latin earns its Cum Laude chapter, a mark of academic distinction. 1965 Headmaster John MacDougal Graham takes a public stand in support of welcoming students of color to Latin. Although there had been a small number of Asian-American students at the school since the late 1950s, Raymond Cyrus was the first African American student enrolled in the lower school in 1964. 1980-1989 1990-1999 First year of Nazi Mind, class retreats and sex education Project Week is launched and Finders Keepers, a school thrift shop is opened by the Parent Association to raise funds for Latin. 2006 1980 First Romans Run and Lower School Olympics The varsity girls soccer team wins the state championship. 1974 Uniforms are suspended in favor of a dress code and Live & Learn, Latin's longtime adult education program is started. 1956 First Lady visits Latin 1981 First Lady and Class of 1939 alumna Nancy Reagan visits Latin. The Board of Trustees recommends that a starting salary for beginning teachers be increased to $3,800 from $3,200. Latin cheerleaders in 1958 1959 Latin sells Kersey Coates Reed land and facilities 1960 Dr. Richard Dolezal joins the Latin faculty, and becomes a teacher, mentor and inspiration to Latin students for more than 50 years. 2010-2013 Girls win state! 1978 1972 2000-2009 Lower school students listen as First Lady Nancy Reagan '39 shares stories of her time at Latin. 2006 Latin girls soccer team 2011 Latin joins the Global Online Academy. 2007 Latin opens its new middle school building at 45 W. North Blvd. 2009 Faculty members Edna Bessent and Dr. Richard Dolezal, enjoying a bike ride at Scott Street. 1969 A new "ultra-modern" middle and upper school building, designed by famed architect Harry Weese, opens at 59 W. North Blvd. Student/Faculty Chorale performs its 25th anniversary concert at St. Chrysostom's Church. Esteemed former choral director Phil Carey started the chorale in 1984 as a way to bring together students, teachers and staff and build community through music. 1987 Upper school launches community service program, which includes the requirement that all sophomores volunteer for at least 40 hours. 1988 100th Anniversary Celebration. 1989 1976 Latin opens first computer lab. Latin and Francis W. Parker School, with funding from the Lloyd Fry Foundation, found the High Jump program. 1995 Latin middle school teachers and students begin tutoring partnership with McCutcheon Elementary, a Chicago public school in Uptown. 2009 Latin School wins its seventh Illinois High School Association Scholastic Bowl state championship in 15 years. 2011 The fifth grade moves from the lower school to become part of the middle school. A new state-of-the-art upper school science center opens on the fourth floor of 45 W. North Blvd. 2012 Latin establishes community service partnership with Uptown neighborhood. Enrollment surpasses 1,000 1998 Latin starts the school year with 1,021 students, the first time enrollment is over a thousand. 2013 Latin celebrates its 125th anniversary with the Our Stories.
