Founded in 1888, Latin School of Chicago
has been one of the city's most respected
independent schools for nearly 140 years.
The school began when a group of parents
enlisted educator Mabel Slade Vickery to lead
a new, parent-owned school operating out of
a private home. Its inaugural class included just
10 boys, all around 10 years old.
Latin was founded as a college-preparatory school rooted
in the classical tradition. The school's name reflects the
importance of Greek and Latin languages and classical studies
in its original curriculum. Today, Latin continues to offer Latin
language courses in both the Middle and Upper Schools.
While the school has grown and evolved over the years,
its commitment to educational excellence and inspiring
a lifelong love of learning has remained unchanged.
