UP FRONT Letter from the Head of School Dear Latin Community, With our 125th birthday on the horizon, this is a great opportunity to remind ourselves that schools exist for the young. In fact, in addition to our entire student population, about 50 percent of our alumni, a good portion of current parents and many of our faculty and staff are under the age of 40. Yet the individuals featured here have much more in common than years on the planet. These pages – these people – are full of passion, dedication, motivation and a shared sense of purpose that drives them to make a mark on the world – often while improving the lives of others. I'm not surprised to find these similarities among the individuals who were interviewed for this magazine. Our students, faculty, staff and alumni have been connected by a set of values that has sustained Latin for 124 years. These values are the timeless principles that guide all that we do and make us who we are. Earlier this year, as part of the strategic planning process, our community came together for the first time to fully articulate what our shared values are. The exercise – which included dozens of group meetings and a community-wide survey – was a necessary one. Confirming these shared principles and embracing them will not only help us recognize our connectedness, but will drive the priorities and challenges that come next. Looking ahead, as we also begin to implement our new strategic plan, prepare to celebrate our 125th anniversary and move forward with plans for an endowment campaign, I can promise that we will witness our students, teachers and alumni bring Latin's values and mission to life in increasingly innovative ways. As one survey respondent wrote, "I am looking forward to supporting and further developing ourselves, as individuals and as a school community, with respect to these core values, in ways that positively impact and shape the future of our shared humanity." I think we can all agree with that sentiment – regardless of what side of 40 we fall on. Best regards, Randall Dunn Head of School 2 L AT I N M AGAZINE
