The moments that Harrison Rogers '17 is not thinking about fishing are few and far between. Harrison has a keen appreciation for the science, art, poetry and sport of fishing. He has big plans for the business of fishing. And, he always, always keeps an eye out for opportunities to fish. So while he is a member of the middle school Science Olympiad team and loves building things, has an interest in biology and learning about plants and animals, and plays hockey, it usually all comes back to fishing. "It's what I want to be doing all the time," Harrison said. Often after school he heads out to Belmont Harbor and brings home his catch for dinner. "I clean and gut them right on our kitchen counter," he said. Recently, during a trip to New York, he convinced his mother that fishing needed to be part of the itinerary. "I said, 'Mom we've got salt water out there, and we're wasting time.'" Harrison and his mother ended up spending their evening under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in Brooklyn catching bluefish, by the dozens. Harrison's passion has also inspired his entrepreneurial spirit. During the summer of 2012, with the help of some professional fishing buddies, Harrison started a fishing camp. The first year, Harrison and six friends headed for his home in Michigan for freshwater fishing. This summer the same group plus a few new recruits are heading to the Florida Keys and in 2014, he is planning a trip to Alaska. Although at this point the venture is not profit-making, Harrison is determined to combine business and pleasure in the future. "Right now I am just trying to learn everything that I can about the business," he said. In addition to learning how to run his camp, Harrison spends much of his free time at his local Bass Pro Shop questioning the professionals. In the end, it all comes down to the fact that Harrison loves everything about fishing… even when it doesn't include fish. "There are people who just love fishing when they are catching fish. I can go eight hours and not catch a thing and still want to go out and do it all over again tomorrow." n "I can go eight hours and not catch a thing and still want to go out and do it all over again tomorrow."
