"I realized for the first time in my life that I can't make decisions because they look good or sound good. I need to do something I really love." 2011. During the fair, the school was advertising an opening in the math department and, on the spur of the moment, Dhaliwal applied. "It was almost like a I was first-year teacher again," Dhaliwal said of coming to Latin. "At my old school, I was a department of one. At Latin I am enjoying collaborating with multiple colleagues in my subject area. The collaboration has helped me to look at old lessons in a new and creative way." She has embraced the many opportunities for professional development and learning from her peers. Dhaliwal also continues to be active in the issues that she is passionate about outside the classroom. She is an adviser for the Asian Students Alliance and facilitates the Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) program, which brings together teachers to talk about equity and diversity issues. She also sits on the associate board of Asian Human Services-Chicago. Seeing students and teachers work together at Latin has been an inspiration. As she continues to think about making an impact in education nationally, Dhaliwal hopes that her future will involve providing quality education to all children. n LATI N SCHOOL OF CHI CA GO 29
