up front New Web Solutions In November of 2008, Latin launched a newly designed Web site to better convey the breadth and depth of programs and activities at the school. The site also has a fresh, updated look and feel, new information architecture, and more-streamlined functionality. With features like FAQs with division directors, Board member biographies, updated sports schedules and photo galleries, it does a wonderful job of communicating to an external audience what Latin is like and what we feel is important as a school and a community. A new intranet solution was rolled out in January 2009. RomanNet, as it has been dubbed, is the source for specific information about classes, clubs, athletics and everything else occurring at the school on a daily basis. For parents, students, faculty and staff, this new solution has become a one-stop-shop for the most current school news. Students report that the ability to view their personalized daily schedule, integrated activity calendar and upcoming assignments has made life a lot easier! These significant upgrades in technology are part of efforts, as indicated in the Long Range Plan, to improve communication within the Latin community, become more environmentally conscious by relying less on paper, and continue to enhance the student experience. Kip Fulbeck meets with students. Pioneering Artist Kip Fulbeck Visits As part of Latin's Multicultural Affairs initiatives, and in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Latin welcomed Kip Fulbeck, artist, author, slam poet, filmmaker and University of California Santa Barbara art professor to address middle and upper school students. Fulbeck's presentation asked, "What are you? The changing face of America." Using his own multi-racial background as a springboard, Fulbeck confronted media imagery and popular culture to inspire the audience to explore how their own ethnic stereotypes and opinions on cultural identity are formed, leading them to honestly consider, "What am I?" According to Esther Pandian-Riske, Latin's dean of Multicultural Affairs, students were able to connect easily with Fulbeck and his message, which led to rich group discussions following the presentation. Fulbeck is the accomplished author of several thought-provoking books and autographed two particular publications; Permanence: Tattoo Portraits and Part Asian, 100% Hapa, while at Latin.
