1955 1958 Richard "Sterling" Harwell reports that the "year began as another serene year of retirement, with tennis, Sudoku, Sterling working on the Grand Jury Association Web site and editing the newsletter, Gail helping with her class reunion Web site; hiking the earthquake trail with visitors, enjoying life as usual around Marin County; and making our annual visit with Sterling's aunt and uncle in Del Mar and another beautiful drive back up the California coast. So much for retirement – however, in August, Bechtel (the engineering-construction firm with whom Sterling spent 28 years and for whom each of us has consulted off and on) hired both of us to help prepare a proposal to expand the Panama Canal. Back to alarm clocks! It was several months of hard (and exciting) work and included a three-week stay in Panama City, complete with trip down the Canal. Now we are looking forward to launching another year of retirement. Grand Jury Association Web site newsletters. Tennis. Sudoku. Visiting friends. Visits from friends. And, who knows, maybe another call from Bechtel?" 1957 William Haddad On January 13, 2009, Nancy Balaban Magidson passed away. She was the beloved mother of James '80 and Deborah '88 (Steve Curley) Magidson; fond grandmother of Sarah Curley; dear sister of Robert '63 (Lynn Grossman) Balaban and the late Susan Flaxman '57; aunt of Mariah and Hazel Balaban and the late John Flaxman. Our deepest condolences are extended to her family and many friends. 1 2 Steve Heineman John Cooper writes that: "Latin has always remained important in my life even though I never graduated. I spent K-8 there before going away to Andover and Princeton. After flying for the Air Force from 1962-1968, I have lived in Arizona. I married Tina in 1970 and we have two children: Courtney is married and living in Chicago, and Reg is single and living in Scottsdale. 1959 REUNION YEAR Rebecca Ericsson Hunter, Richard Van Mell Becky Ericsson Hunter writes: "Christmas was hosted graciously by my son Rob and June in Salt Lake City. (Family picture below.) The twins are 4 years old, very active and learning every minute. My daughter Alice continues to teach and perform dance in Cambridge, MA. She takes classes in calculus and capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) for fun. My other son, David, left his job in the U.S. Senate to become the U.S. policy leader for the International Emissions Trading Association. They work to expand the trading of carbon emissions as a way to reduce production of greenhouse gasses. I remain busy and am currently sitting on the boards of several volunteer groups. I enjoy frequent visits to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and am the incoming president of the Texas Society of Pathologists. Last September, my husband (Bob) and I attended a joint meeting of the Association of Clinical Scientists and the St. Petersburg Pathology Society in St. Petersburg, Russia. Bob hopes to set up lasting research collaboration with them on tuberculosis. The trip was rich in architectural surprises. The best part? Alice came with us! We write this from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where we are attending the APC council meeting. On our free day, we took a canopy tour, a zip line in 12 segments covering over three miles back 3 1 Phoebe Braddock Clarke, Peter Burrows, and Tish Coolidge Ayars (all '56) met up at Tisha's 70th birthday celebration this past summer. 2 Nancy Balaban Magidson in 1957. 3 Becky Ericsson Hunter '59 with her family over the Christmas holidays Latin School of Chicago 29
