More than 13,000 cataract/implant operations performed before moving onward to become a medical device inventor and executive. With 35 to 40 patents pending, I am not out of gas yet! Kemp 1958 Morton Arnsdorf Steve Heineman Steven Heineman writes: "Carol Teuscher '60, Bill Bowe '60, Jim Kegel '59 and I enjoyed an outstanding lunch this past June in Chicago at Hot Doug's: The Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium owned by Doug Sohn '80. The delicious hot dogs served there validated the remark we heard made by one of Doug's customers that eating a hot dog at Hot Doug's is "a life-changing event." 1967 John Friedman 1959 Robin Jansen Shope's novel, The Christmas Edition, is being made into a feature film. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Wisconsin late in 2009 or early 2010. Nancy Baker Rick Van Mell R. Kemp Massengill writes: I would have liked very 1969 much to come to the reunion, but, sadly, it was impossible, as we have a family vacation at that exact time planned several years ago for the whole family. Even though I was only at the Latin School for the ninth and tenth grades (as my father in the Public Health Service was transferred to Ft. Worth, Texas), I have very fond memories of the fine group of classmates we had, and, of course, the first-class education received. Latin School was – by far – the hardest school I ever attended, and that included medical school, etc. After high school I went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from Duke, then to medical school at Johns Hopkins. After a brief stint with my own recording studio (where gold and platinum records were produced for artists such as Jimi Hendrix, the Ramones and Emmylou Harris), I changed directions to Gail Dugas Ron Pen Jeanette Castro Hachmeister received a 2009 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Jeanette teaches students with hearing impairment at Beginning 1st Child's Voice School. Singing plays a major role in Jeanette's classroom. She values the benefits of engaging students through music and movement. If you ask her, "Why do you sing?" she quickly answers that for hearingimpaired students the singing helps them with language patterns and more importantly helps their brain solidify what they heard into thought processes. Jeanette has created a safe and secure atmosphere for her 28 students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Her students range in age from 3 to 7, and their academic levels vary as well. Jeanette believes with the advent of cochlear implants and better hearing aids, children as young as infants can access sound. She believes if a child can perceive sound then they can learn language and speech. Jeanette Hachmeister is a creative advocate for hearing-impaired students and their parents. 2 1 1 Esther and Kemp Massengill '59 with their two dogs. 2 Students celebrate their teacher, Jeannette Castro Hachmeister '69 recipient of a 2009 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching Latin School of Chicago 47
