OUI, CHEF!
Several chefs cuisiniers et patissiers were on
display in the seventh grade French class as they
created a how-to cooking video for a dish of their
choosing. Each video was accompanied by a
written recipe that included all ingredients and a
step-by-step preparation guide. The class enjoyed
seeing several French specialties such as crème
brûlée, macarons and a gâteau St. Honoré as
well as classics like chocolate chip cookies and
brownies being prepared by their classmates.
This project was the culmination of the unit
"Célébrons Ensemble," where students were given
opportunities to identify, research, describe and
even taste the many things that bring us together.
At the center of the unit was, "Des Lumières
pour Gita," a short film by Michael Vo that tells
Gita's story of sharing an important part of her
identity, her favorite holiday traditions, with her
new community of friends after her family moves
from India to Canada. Before and after learning
about Gita, students worked on describing
themselves and what is important to them, to
identify commonalities with others, to work with a
group to research a holiday celebrated around the
world, and, of course, to play the role of chef for an
entrée, plat, ou dessert that they enjoy eating with
others. Délicieux!
