News & Notes After the harvest, Liz Sommer, Latin's dietitian and nutritionist, prepared a cooking demonstration for the first graders. She showed the students how to make thyme and blackberry simple syrup for lemonade. e students enjoyed the lemonade at lunch and were able to recognize the taste of thyme in their sweet treat. Sommer will continue to use the herbs in lunch recipes throughout the year and teach the students more about the food we eat and share as a community. First Grade Harvest: From Garden to Table Over the past couple of months, first grade students explored and thought about what it means to be part of a community. One essential question students kept revisiting was, "How can we contribute to our school community?" e first graders spent recess together in the Greenwood Learning Garden each day. In addition to running, building and imaginative play, students tasted herbs and vegetables from the garden beds. Many students have taken on the responsibility of caring for the garden. As the season changed from summer to fall, they began to think about what they could do with the herbs. As a grade, they explored the word harvest and determined how they could take action, as harvesters, to make Latin's community an even better place. To prepare for the harvest, students gathered materials and each class was assigned different herbs to gather. In the garden, the students worked together to cut, package, label and photograph the herbs. Over two days, first graders assembled more than 20 bags of herbs and delivered them to our school kitchen. When they reflected on their experience, the students expressed feelings of accomplishment and recognized that when they worked together, they achieved great things. AROUND SCHOOL 6
