"I felt free. Free from
the weight of being one
of eight black kids in
my grade. Free as one
of five million black
kids in Rwanda."
e song ended, and I struck my final pose. I hadn't eaten
breakfast that morning, yet I couldn't bring myself to eat lunch
that day. It felt like my stomach was bursting at the seams, not
with food, but with joy. A joy that transcended hunger, that
invigorated me, that inspired me, that motivated me. I carried
that fullness with me for the rest of my trip, and when I arrived
back in Chicago, I was determined to sustain that inexplicable,
intangible joy. I refuse to let my fear inhibit me from doing
and sharing the things I love. While I am still nowhere near an
open book, I now recognize the value in sharing a few more of
my chapters. I might never get the chance to revisit Rwanda.
But that tiny country, with its luscious green mountains, red
dust-filled air and beautiful bronzed people taught me to love
myself enough to share myself. I will spend the rest of my life
treasuring that gift.
