Dear Romans, Here we find ourselves at the opening of a new decade, wondering what the '20s will bring to pass. Curious about Latin in the 1920s, I turned to Latin's timeline from the 125th anniversary edition of the magazine. Latin's most enduring tie to the Roaring '20s is the building at 1531 N. Dearborn, the current lower school, former boys' school and (briefly) first co-ed upper school building in the school's modern history. Every alumnus currently alive who attended Latin in the early grades spent time in the same building as our current 4 year-olds. at's quite a historical link, and the lower schoolers delight in seeing photos of how the school used to look. Another 1920s innovation? An alumni association. e Girls Latin School Alumnae Association first organized in 1924, while the Boys School never formed an official association but held an annual luncheon. e original alumni office opened in 1952, staffed by retired teacher and steadfast correspondent Dorothy Hammett for 23 years. Ten decades later, we have an active and thriving alumni community. Electronic communications and the Connect Latin School networking platform make it easier to stay connected with Latin and fellow alumni from anywhere in the world. Reunions and programs like Life After Latin and Latin Professionals Evening provide opportunities to gather in person in Chicago, while regional events bring us together in several states each year. Alumni also are connecting with Project Week groups around the country, and even abroad. How are you connecting with your Latin roots? National Latin Day on April 16 gives us an opportunity in the spring, but why wait? • Email, call or write to a classmate or faculty member. e alumni office is happy to forward messages sent via email or letters by snail mail. • Register for Connect Latin School at www.connectlatinschool.org and volunteer to "mentor" other alumni. • Post a photo on Instagram with #latinalumni or a memory on Facebook and tag @latinalumni. • Meet up with Latin friends, colleagues and classmates. Don't forget send a photo to alumni@latinschool.org. Bonus points for wearing the orange & blue! As for me, I'm planning on connecting frequently this year, as the great Class of 1995 celebrates a big reunion the first weekend of October 2020. Hoping to see many of you from the classes ending in 5s and 0s and many Golden Romans in Chicago this fall! Best, Jenny Cizner '95 Alumni Association President alumnipresident@latinschool.org Jenny Cizner, a member of the Latin School Class of 1995, is currently the chief operating officer at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
