Dear Latin Community, Latin's 130th year was another one filled with exciting learning. Over the course of 2018-19, students, faculty, staff, trustees, parents and alumni participated in the process of designing our new strategic path. Your feedback about the most essential parts of the Latin experience helped us design a course that continues our forward momentum with even greater focus. e end result, which will be shared in full in the fall, merges the strength of our 130-year liberal arts legacy with a confident vision for educational excellence for our ever-changing world. Latin is fortunate to be grounded by such deep roots, but also to possess the spirit to reach constantly upward. e stories shared in this issue of Latin Magazine are a wonderful representation of this contrast. e annual Middle School Math Competition at Latin, a rigorous academic tradition that allows students and teachers to explore their passion for all things mathematical, and our year-end commencement activities are important traditions that sustain and nourish our community. At the same time, Class of 2001 alum Sadaf Jaffer's story of becoming the first South Asian woman to serve as a mayor in New Jersey and one of the first in the country is an inspiring example of how a Latin experience provides the skills and confidence to question tradition, to take risks, to break new ground. As Latin enters into its next decade, I am eager to share more stories about how we are preparing students for the world they will inhabit, while staying true to the values we all hold dear. It is sure to be a journey that is unique to Latin: challenging, meaningful, fueled by a love of learning and filled with joy.
