Athletics 18 AROUND SCHOOL Winter and Spring Season Highlights BOYS BASKETBALL e Romans finished the season with an overall record of 21-4 and 11-1 in the Independent School League (ISL Champions). Led by captains Ysrael Hernandez '19 (1,430 career points) and Ben Krambeck '19 (boys all-time assists leader), the team started the season on a 10-game winning streak and carried that momentum throughout the campaign. Also making huge contributions to the team's success were seniors David Hynes '19 and Michael DiCostanzo '19. Highlights included two convincing wins versus Francis W. Parker school, clinching the ISL prior to the last game, and hosting the IHSA regionals. Hernandez was selected ISL Player-of-the-Year and Dave VanderMeulen was named ISL Coach-of-the-Year. GIRLS BASKETBALL Pressing constantly and playing with high pace, the girls basketball team averaged 58 points per game. During the latter portion of the season, the team improved on both sides of the floor and won nine games in a row. In the end, the Romans earned their 11th consecutive ISL conference crown – the 21st title in the last 22 years – as well as their fourth consecutive IHSA regional title. Natalie Mann '21 was selected ISL Player-of-the-Year and Max Rouse was named ISL Coach-of-the-Year. VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER e varsity team continued Latin's strong soccer tradition in Illinois. Runner-up in the ISL (after four consecutive titles), the Romans notched their sixth consecutive IHSA regional championship. Eventually reaching the round of 16 in the IHSA state tournament, the season ended with a thrilling contest versus Fenwick high school in sudden-death penalty kicks. It should be noted these feats were accomplished in Class 2A, which pitted Latin against schools two to four times larger. Led by seniors Lily Campbell '19, Charlotte Cronister '19 (C), Annabel Edwards '19, Rachel Sinar '19 and Jessie Sulger '19 (C), the team rose to the challenge again and again. BOYS TENNIS Despite the move up to Class 2A, this group of racquet-wielding Romans proved they belong with the best of the best. Season highlights included an undefeated dual record, a first-place finish at the Evanston and Roman Invites, an ISL championship, a Class 2A sectional championship and a 10th-place finish at State, for the singles, Ben Mitchell '20 and Sujan Garapati '21, and doubles, Tej Bahri '20 & Jonathan Wuyan '20 and Will Benford '22 & Pierce Rutledge '20. For the first time ever, Latin swept all four awards for girls and boys basketball ISL Player-of-the-Year and ISL Coach-of-the-Year in the same season.
