Lower schoolers gave 'em "pumpkin" to talk about with the annual pumpkin parade. Students decorated pumpkins as characters from some of their favorite library books, including "Uni the Unicorn," "Goldilicious" and "The Philly Fake." The upper school College Counseling Office recommends "The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives" by William Stixrud Ph.D. and Ned Johnson about how to minimize anxiety and raise children who have their eyes on more than just the college "prize." Many often think that getting into college is the main goal for the end of high school. This books explains that there are many great goals to set in life, but the real goal is to raise prepared children who are curious, accountable, compassionate and resilient. A recent statistic revealed that the United States uses more than 500 million straws each day — enough straws to circle the entire planet earth two and a half times! Latin's environmental sustainability group joined the same movement as some global food chains, including Starbucks and McDonald's, which discourages the use of disposable plastic straws. Students, faculty and staff were given a reusable aluminum straw, complete with a cleaning brush, to promote environmental sustainability. The long homeroom period for fifth grade students is one not to miss! Students use the time to participate in the "Treating Others with Etiquette and Respect" (TOWER) program, where they work on building life skills. Some of the topics they study include: PUMPKINS ON PARADE Over the course of the 34 days of the Summer at Latin program, the pool and aquatics staff spent 323 hours building swimmers, water polo players and water safety experts! LATIN 360 GREEN GIFT A GOOD READ BUILDING LIFE SKILLS Portraying a Positive Self-Image Walking About Audience Etiquette Internet Safety & Savvy Self-Advocacy Living Green Health & Wellness, Equity Diversity & Justice Anti-Bullying Goal-Setting 323 Hours UPTOWN PARTNERSHIP 42 Latin upper school students have enrolled in the Dance Mentoring Program class over the last three years.
