THEN NOW Mary Maj Isabelle Lawrence Latin Glee Club, 1960s Chicago Tribune, March 8, 1960 TO LATIN WE ARE TRUE "To Latin We Are True" rst debuted in March of 1960 at a benet luncheon at the Casino Club. Written by English faculty member and prolic author Isabelle Lawrence, with music by music teacher Mary Maj, "To Latin We Are True" is now the ocial song of the lower school and is sung at assemblies and lower school gatherings. ORIGINAL FIGHT SONG Dr. Richard Davis '43 shares: "e rst Chicago Latin School for Boys 'Fight Song' was written for the football team of 1942 by a medical student of my father at the Northwestern Medical School. It was recorded by the Medical School Student Orchestra on a 78 record and played in the gym of the boys school before each football game and sung by the student body with the football team standing on the stage." OH GO, YOU ROMANS! Our current ght song, "Oh Go, You Romans," was written by Band Director Mike Teolis in 1996. After nishing up his performance at Latin's graduation that June, Teolis turned and fell forward o the stage at the Art Institute, breaking both arms. Talk about a grand nale! What does a musician with two broken arms do while convalescing? Compose a song in his head, of course! Once Teolis regained the use of his arms, he committed the song to paper, and an iconic tune was born. 51 LATIN MAGAZINE SUMMER 2018 51
