Dear Latin Community, What does leadership mean to you? As a unifying theme this year, we set out to dene, acknowledge, foster and practice it in all the ways we could. What we found is that leadership is often in the eye of the beholder … so not that it exists or doesn't exist, but rather it is created by the observer. And I see leadership everywhere at Latin. I see leadership in our students when they grab the hand of their lower school buddy; when they demonstrate their athleticism and grit by breaking school and league records; when they take on academic and physical challenges during Project Week; and when they use their clear, young voices to speak up about gun violence in our schools. I see leadership in teachers when they devote their life's work to a school community and to building programs that will survive long after their retirement; when a combined 66 years of service to our school has resulted in a more collegial and spirited atmosphere; and when generations of students can give them credit for their own passionate devotion to athletics or music. I see leadership in Latin's alumni when they come back and give back to current students; when they are open-minded and humble enough to learn just as much as they shared; and when they are continually present in the life of our school. You too can see what I am referring to in the pages of this magazine. Our theme of leadership left us no shortage of stories to tell. As we look forward to beginning a new decade with our 130th year, we understand that the importance of leadership will not fade. What this year has taught us is that you don't need to look far at Latin to nd it. My best, Randall Dunn Head of School LATIN MAGAZINE SUMMER 2018 3
