If it will be of help, I will name you by name. Some of them differ and some sound the same. Your names are all special, like each one of you; But you have to depart, so this I will do…" — Randall Dunn, Head of School during his Dr. Suess-inspired poem to the fourth grade A student summed it up, 'I felt as though during these past four years, thanks to academic and social progression, I became a new and better version of myself, which is all I could have asked for.' And that's all we could ask for." — Deb Sampey, middle school director in her remarks to graduating eighth graders Each year, Latin's culminating events serve as a way to recognize and honor the many shared achievements. Graduation ceremonies, award presentations and inductions into our academic societies of Cum Laude and Erasmus represent some of the longest-standing traditions at Latin and speak to the core of what we stand for as a school — a devotion to excellent teaching and learning, a faithfulness to our school community, and a shared desire to live and work with integrity. For students marking a major transition — whether to a new division or to college — these events are exciting and future-focused. For teachers, staff and trustees, they are opportunities to acknowledge outstanding teaching, tenure and volunteer leadership over the course of many years. e description of the August K. Maxwell, Jr. Award, states that it be bestowed upon the person "…who has demonstrated extraordinary support, loyalty and devotion to the Latin School community; and rendered such outstanding service as to make a lasting impact on the school." is statement holds true for every student, teacher, parent and trustee included here. 21 LATIN MAGAZINE » SUMMER 2018
